A Practitioner's Guide to Progressive Design Build

APRIL 15

BREAKOUT SESSION #1

2:15 PM

Fairway Center Room

1 DBIA Credit Hour (AIA Credits Pending)

Owners are looking to Progressive Design Build (PDB) as a new delivery method and many are interested in the results from projects that have been successfully completed. Our presenting team has performed two major roadway/bridge projects: US 89 Reconstruction ($384m) and 5600 S Reconstruction ($350m) using PDB. The project team and UDOT have done extensive documenting of the process, challenges, opportunities, lessons learned, and tools developed to get these complicated projects complete. Both projects included a complex range of federal government, local jurisdictions, right-of-way needs, intergovernmental agreements and thousands of utility conflicts that required teamwork to navigate. Our presentation will outline the best practices, lessons learned and future improvements determined by our project teams including UDOT, the contractor, contractor’s engineer, program manager, ROW and utility specialist and the Independent Construction Estimator.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define Progressive Design Build, where is it valuable, how is it different than other delivery methods

  2. Identify the biggest challenges in using PDB

  3. Describe the greatest benefits of PDB including examples of innovation

  4. Apply the lessons learned and future improvements recommended
