BREAKOUT SESSION #2
3:30 PM
Fairway Center Room
1 DBIA Credit Hour
1 AIA Credit Hour
For the Broadway Street project in downtown San Antonio, early collaboration between Sundt and AECOM streamlined decision-making and problem-solving, addressing challenges like managing century-old utilities and coordinating with over 100 stakeholders, including the City of San Antonio, utility companies, private developers, and small businesses. Broadway Street, a critical artery connecting the city’s historic core to its northern neighborhoods, serves as a model for how early engagement in progressive design-build projects drives success. Challenges such as preserving existing structures, utility lines dating back to the 1800s, other projects under development, local events and COVID-19 required ongoing collaboration and communication. This session will explore how office co-location, early engagement, a clear issue resolution process and ongoing communication mitigated delays and led to a smoother, faster completion process. Attendees will walk away with key insights into how early collaboration enhances project outcomes on city street construction projects, particularly in complex urban environments.
Learning Objectives:
Examine the impact of stakeholder management on project success.
Identify the benefits of early engagement among owner, designer and contractor.
Evaluate the benefits of co-location, issue resolution process, and regular task force meetings on team morale and project outcomes.
Demonstrate how progressive design-build can lead to a smoother construction process.
